SCHOOL
INSTALLATIONS

Old Bonhomme was my home for 25 years. I loved working with the students to create and beautify our space. We had several annual projects that added to the uniqueness of our building. In addition we would often have school wide projects that engage the entire school community.

The OB Mural was led by Sarah Linquist, a local muralist and scenic painter extroidinaire. The project used a unique process that allowed students to paint their imagery in the classroom. The parent volunteer team cut out the images and Sarah and I installed them all using gel medium as a fixative. The final product looks like a single painted mural without the dangerous and cumbersome issues of 375 children painting on ladders and scaffolding. The piece was always an icon of Old Bonhomme School.

The tile frieze was an annual event that engaged the 4th grade students. Each year the 4th graders would choose a theme for their frieze. We would brainstorm ways to include every artist and use the space in an interesting way. Students learned about the role ceramics have played in architecture and history. The students explored various techniques in making the friezes. The large scale installations were a colorful expression along our hallway each unique to the class that created them.

The mosaics at Old Bonhomme were created annually by our 2nd grade artists. The process was a wonderful way to build community among the students. The ideas were brainstormed and voted upon and designs were created. Each year we discovered ways to divide the piece into parts so every artist felt valued and engaged. Mosaic has so many metaphors that relate to community, unity and connectedness.

I love the challenge of site specific artwork and working with young artists. If you are interested in creating a permanent work in your school or community please reach out to discuss the project with me personally.
